Additional Considerations & FAQs
I have an Appaloosa and its tail is extremely short compared to the other horses I have. Why is that?
Short tails also known as "rat tails", are characteristic of a true Appaloosa. It is genetic. History suggests that the Indians may have bred them to have short tails to make hunting easier. The shorter the tail, the less likely it was to get caught in bushes and shrubs. Nowadays an Appaloosa that has a short tail is considered to be closely related to the original Appaloosa bloodline.
I live in an area that has fly problems and they seem to be attracted to my Appaloosa. She's having a hard time keeping them away because her tail is so short. What can I do to keep the flies from her?
There are a number of things you can do to help keep the flies away. First, invest in a good fly spray and be sure to apply it regularly (especially to the legs and belly). Fly masks and fly sheets can be purchased as well. These are made of breathable mesh like material and can help keep flies off. Some people may invest in a fake tail or tail extensions for their Appaloosa. Care should be taken when using these as the Appaloosa often has brittle hair and a heavy tail extension can damage the existing tail hair.
My Appaloosa seems to be dropping its feed all the time. Is this normal or an act of boredom?
Most of time when this happens it may be because the horse has an underlying dental problem. It could be as simple as the horse needs its teeth floated (filed down) or that the caps (baby teeth) may need to be manually pulled out. Contact your veterinarian and they can let you know for sure.
My last horse needed to wear horseshoes. I just got an Appaloosa and was wondering if she would need them too?
Most Appaloosas have strong hardy hooves and can often go barefoot (without shoes). The type and amount of work you intend to do with your Appaloosa may influence your decision. Each horse should be judged on a case by case basis.
I am looking to buy an Appaloosa yearling to add to my ranch but I have a 6 year old daughter. Are Appaloosas okay to have around young children?
Yes, Appaloosas are extremely calm and docile. Not to mention very affectionate.
What types of competition are Appaloosas good at?
Appaloosas are a versatile breed and can be used for a wide variety of competitions. They can be trained to compete in almost anything. Many are used for polo, dressage, show jumping, and endurance riding, as well as western gaming, barrel racing, roping and cutting/herding.
